Domain & SEO Glossary
Plain-English definitions for the domain investing, brand strategy, and SEO terms used across OurIdeasWork.com — escrow, EPP codes, exact-match domains, E-E-A-T, schema, and more.
- Aftermarket
- The secondary market where already-registered domain names are bought and sold between private parties — distinct from registering an unclaimed name at a registrar.
- Aged Domain
- A domain registered for many years with continuous use or renewal history. Aged domains often carry trust signals — backlinks, indexation history, brand familiarity — that newly-registered names do not.
- AggregateOffer
- A Schema.org type used to describe a collection of offers with a price range and inventory count. OurIdeasWork.com uses AggregateOffer to expose portfolio pricing to search and answer engines.
- Blueprint (Domain Blueprint)
- An original business concept document paired with a domain — market analysis, audience, revenue model, competitive landscape, SEO strategy, and launch checklist. Every OurIdeasWork.com domain ships with concept directions.
- Brandable Domain
- A short, invented, or phonetic name (e.g. Zillow, Stripe) that carries no descriptive meaning out of the box. Brandable names require marketing investment to load with meaning.
- BreadcrumbList
- A Schema.org markup type that describes the navigational path of a page so search engines can render breadcrumb links in result snippets.
- Canonical URL
- The preferred URL for a piece of content, declared via <link rel="canonical">. Canonical tags consolidate ranking signals when the same content is reachable from multiple URLs.
- ccTLD
- A country-code top-level domain such as .uk, .de, or .jp. ccTLDs typically signal geographic targeting to search engines.
- CTR (Click-Through Rate)
- The percentage of impressions that result in a click. Premium .com domains consistently earn higher CTR than alternative extensions on the same SERP.
- DefinedTerm / DefinedTermSet
- Schema.org types used to describe a glossary entry and the set it belongs to — the structured-data backbone of this page.
- Descriptive Domain
- A domain whose words describe what the business does (e.g. GoodSeats.com, BrainMatters.com). Descriptive names arrive with meaning pre-loaded and require less brand-building spend.
- E-E-A-T
- Google's rubric for evaluating content quality: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Author bios, credentials, and transparent ownership are core E-E-A-T signals.
- EPP Code (Auth Code)
- Extensible Provisioning Protocol authorization code. A registrar-issued password required to transfer a domain between registrars. Buyers receive an EPP code as part of the transfer step.
- Escrow.com
- The neutral third-party payment service used for every OurIdeasWork.com transaction. Funds are released to the seller only after the buyer confirms receipt of the domain.
- Exact-Match Domain
- A domain whose name matches a high-intent search query verbatim — e.g. CarInsurance.com for the query "car insurance." Exact-match .com names benefit from instant topical authority and elevated click-through rates.
- FAQPage
- Schema.org markup that declares a list of question/answer pairs. Used by Google to render expandable FAQ blocks in search results.
- Fluency Effect
- The cognitive bias by which names that are easy to read and pronounce are perceived as more trustworthy and likeable. The strongest predictor of brand-name effectiveness.
- gTLD
- A generic top-level domain such as .com, .org, or .info — as opposed to a country-code TLD.
- HowTo Schema
- Schema.org markup describing the sequential steps of a procedure. OurIdeasWork.com uses HowTo schema on the buyer's guide.
- ICANN
- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers — the nonprofit that governs the domain name system, including transfer policies.
- Inter-Registrar Transfer
- The ICANN-governed process for moving a domain from one registrar to another. Typically completes in 5–7 days and requires an EPP code.
- mainEntity / mainEntityOfPage
- Schema.org properties that declare which structured-data object is the primary subject of a page. Critical for article and product pages.
- Person Schema
- Schema.org type describing a real human author. Person schema with sameAs links is a primary E-E-A-T signal for AI search engines.
- Premium .com
- A short, memorable, descriptive .com domain with measurable brand or SEO value. Distinct from the long tail of available .com registrations.
- Registrant
- The legal owner of record for a domain name. Visible in historical WHOIS records and registrar accounts.
- Registrar
- An ICANN-accredited company (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Dynadot, etc.) authorized to sell and manage domain registrations.
- Registrar Push
- An intra-registrar transfer where ownership moves between two accounts at the same registrar — faster than an ICANN transfer and a common option when buyer and seller use the same provider.
- sameAs
- A Schema.org property linking an entity to its canonical profiles elsewhere (X, LinkedIn, Wikipedia). The primary mechanism by which AI engines disambiguate one Person or Organization from another.
- SLD (Second-Level Domain)
- The portion of a domain to the left of the TLD — e.g. "ourideaswork" in ourideaswork.com.
- Structured Data
- Machine-readable metadata (typically JSON-LD) describing the entities, relationships, and facts on a page. The native language of answer engines.
- TLD (Top-Level Domain)
- The final segment of a domain name — .com, .org, .io, .ai, etc. .com remains the dominant trust-bearing extension globally.
- Type-In Traffic
- Direct navigational visits from users typing a domain directly into their browser. Free, high-intent traffic that exact-match descriptive .com names attract organically.
- URL Slug
- The human-readable identifier at the end of a URL path — e.g. "glossary" in /glossary. Slugs should be short, descriptive, and stable.
- WHOIS
- The public protocol for querying domain registration metadata — registrar, creation date, expiry. WHOIS history reveals a domain's age and ownership lineage.
